ISM, UNII and Licensed Bands
ISM (Unlicensed band)
UNII (Unlicensed band)
60GHz (Unlicensed band)
3.6GHz (Licensed band)
4.9GHz (Licensed band)
ISM (Unlicensed band)
- The ISM bands are defined by the ITU.
Industrial, Scientific, Medical bands were initially assigned the frequencies for use, but today this is no longer the case: - Industrial: 900MHz (902 MHz – 928 MHz (26 MHz wide))
- Products that may use this Frequency:
- Baby monitors
- wireless home telephones
- wireless headphones
- Baby monitors
- Products that may use this Frequency:
- Scientific: 2.4GHz (100 MHz wide)
- Products that may use this Frequency:
- Primarily a band that is used by Wi-Fi devices
- microwave ovens
- cordless home telephones
- baby monitors
- wireless video cameras
- Primarily a band that is used by Wi-Fi devices
- Products that may use this Frequency:
- Medical: 5.8 GHz ISM band is 150 MHz wide and spans from 5.725 GHz to 5.875 GHz. (150 MHz wide)
- There is sometimes confusion between the 5.8 GHz ISM band with the U-NII-3 band, which spans from 5.725 GHz to 5.85 GHz. Both unlicensed bands span the same frequency space. However, the 5.8 GHz ISM band is 25 MHz larger.

UNII (Unlicensed band)
- Unlicensed National Information Infrastructure bands were designated by the 802.11a standard.
- 4 bands were designated:
- U-NII-1 (lower): 100 MHz wide, 5.150 GHz-5.250 GHz
- U-NII-2 (middle): 100 MHz wide, 5.250 GHz-5.350 GHz
- U-NII-2 Extended: 255MHz wide, 5.470 GHz-5725 GHz
- U-NII-3 (upper): 125MHz wide, 5.725 GHz-5.850 GHz
- Channel 165, formerly in the 5.8 GHz ISM band, is now available as part of the U-NII-3 band.
- Channel 165, formerly in the 5.8 GHz ISM band, is now available as part of the U-NII-3 band.
- U-NII-1 (lower): 100 MHz wide, 5.150 GHz-5.250 GHz
60GHz (Unlicensed band)
- 802.11ad
- Speeds of up to 7Gbps
- Short distance communication indoors
3.6GHz (Licensed band)
- 802.11y amendment
- 3.65 GHz-3.7 GHz
- Frequency range was nonexclusive
- Limitations when used near certain satellite earth stations
- Operate in any 5 MHz, 10 MHz, or 20 MHz channel
- Used to provide up to 3 miles connectivity outdoors, last mile WISP or high powered stations can be used as backhaul for networks
4.9GHz (Licensed band)
- 802.11-2012 standard
- 4.94 GHz-4.99 GHz in US, Canada and Mexico, Japan (802.11j 4.9 GHz-5.091 GHz)
- Frequency range was nonexclusive
- Limitations when used near certain satellite earth stations
- Operate in any 5 MHz, 10 MHz, or 20 MHz channel
- Used for Public Safety Organizations
